Lankapara Tea Garden: A Decade of Struggle and Hope for Revival
Writes Subham sunar
Lankapara Tea Garden, nestled in the middle of Dooars in Alipurduar's North Bengal, has been facing tough times for the past ten years. The sudden closure of its factory, once managed by Duncans tea company, left many people without jobs. More than 4000 tea workers lost their employment due to the shutdown, causing financial hardships for their families.
The closure also affected the education of young students in Lankapara. Many had to leave their schools because of the family's financial struggles. Now, they find themselves forced to work in other states or even abroad to make ends meet.
In some parts of Lankapara, third-party stakeholders are running tea gardens, providing wages to workers. However, there are concerns about the lack of proper medical facilities and bonuses for the workers.
Adding to the troubles, some political parties have been making empty promises to the workers just to win their votes, without offering real solutions to their problems. This has left the workers feeling disappointed and betrayed.
The situation became even worse when some mischievous individuals vandalized all the bungalows, the tea factory, and the hospital in the area. These senseless acts of destruction added to the challenges faced by the community.
Despite all the hardships and the vandalized state of the factory, bungalows, and hospital, the people of Lankapara continue to hold on to hope. They believe that the tea garden will reopen someday and bring back prosperity to their lives but still the question arises, when ?
