A deadly 6.4 magnitude earthquake kills 69 in Nepal's Western Jajarkot Region
A powerful earthquake rocked Nepal's western region of Jajarkot on Friday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 69 lives and leaving numerous others injured as per Reuters report. The chief of the National Seismological Center, Lok Vijay Adhikari, reported that an earthquake occurred in Jajarkot at 11:47 PM with 6.4 magnitude on Friday night.
Witness accounts describe the collapse of houses in the area, while tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, India.
"Efforts to establish communication with the affected area near the epicenter have been hindered by the rugged terrain of Jajarkot, which is home to approximately 190,000 people living in scattered villages across remote hills" , said the local officials.
Jajarkot local official Harish Chandra Sharma said at least 34 people had been killed in his district while in neighbouring Rukum West district, police official Namaraj Bhattarai said at least 35 deaths had been reported.
Expressing profound grief at the loss of life and property, Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal urged security agencies to immediately initiate rescue and relief operations. The Prime Minister conveyed this message on social media X, formerly known as Twitter.
