Siliguri, West Bengal: In a landmark judgment, the Siliguri court has sentenced Muhammad Abbas to death for the rape and murder of a minor Gorkha girl. The brutal crime, which shocked the community, occurred on August 21, 2023, when the young girl, a 16 year old student in Matigara, Siliguri was abducted, raped, and murdered in an abandoned area under the jurisdiction of the Matigara police station, Siliguri.
The investigation by SI Paresh Barman revealed that she had been sexually assaulted before her death. Close scrutiny of CCTV footage helped Paresh zero in on Mohd Abbas, who confessed to giving the victim a lift on his bicycle, and taking her to the remote area, where he sexually assaulted her, hitting her repeatedly in the head with a brick to stop her from struggling. Just six hours after the crime, the police apprehended the accused, Muhammad Abbas, based on CCTV footage that captured his involvement. The swift police action provided crucial evidence in the prosecution of the case.
Today, after a year-long legal battle, the court delivered its verdict, sentencing Muhammad Abbas to the death penalty. The decision has brought a sense of closure to the victim's family and the community, who have been tirelessly fighting for justice since the incident.
